HBOC: Celebrating the birds of the Hunter Region

The Hunter Bird Observers Club is widely regarded as one of the region’s most respected nature groups. Established to promote the appreciation and study of local birdlife, the club is supported by a dedicated community of birdwatchers, conservationists, and nature lovers.

Regular field outings, bird surveys, and educational events are hosted throughout the year, offering opportunities for members and the public to explore the diverse habitats of the Hunter region. Conservation initiatives are regularly undertaken to help preserve critical bird habitats and to contribute valuable data to national and international ornithological projects.

New members are welcomed with enthusiasm, and knowledge-sharing is encouraged through newsletters, meetings, and collaborative activities. The club’s activities are made possible through the collective efforts of volunteers and the strong partnerships formed with environmental and community organisations.

Several AEP staff are members and regular participants in the Hunter Bird Observers Club, reflecting our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Craig Anderson sits on the Records Appraisal Committee which assesses and vets any reported unusual sightings, and also contributes to the pre-publication review of HBOC Annual Bird Reports. Ian Benson acts as the Hunter Moderator for E-Bird, which aims to ensure that all bird records in the region are accurately recorded, providing accurate and important data for bird monitoring and management across the region.
