AEP’s resident sniffing superstars, Dash and Gus, take detection work to the next level. Whether it’s tracking koalas, cane toads, or owls, these expertly trained dogs work tirelessly alongside their handlers to uncover crucial environmental data. With boundless energy and unwavering focus, they prove that when it comes to conservation, a keen nose makes all the difference.
Dash
Handled by our Principal Ecologist, Ian Benson, Dash is our pint-sized powerhouse and resident sniffing superhero! She is a purpose-bred Working Cocker Spaniel by Bodhran Kennels from champion field lines from Australia and the UK. Trained to detect koalas, cane toads, and owls, Dash's nose knows no bounds. Her next challenge will be field surveys for the Hunter Valley Delma (Delma vescolineata), with Animal Ethics approval granted and scent training underway
Don't let her small stature and blonde tips fool you - she zips around faster than a speeding bullet. Just be careful when she gets excited; her tail wag is like a whip! 🐾
Ian has been mentored under the tutelage of expert Dog Trainer, Steve Austin. Ian and Dash operate under relevant Scientific License requirements and animal ethics approvals.
Gus
Handled by our Senior Environmental Manager, Natalie Black, Gus is a big boy in both length and height, powerful and ready to sniff all day long! He is a purpose-bred Working English Springer Spaniel by Wentlooge Spaniels from champion Australian field lines.
Trained to detect koalas, Gus’s nose and love of balls drive him to sniff for scats all day long. His dopey eyes, floppy ears and feathery tail win all the hearts, but don’t let that fool you into thinking he is a softy, for he knows no bounds on the search. Be prepared when you sit down as this big boy truly believes he is a tiny lap dog! 🐾
